Feeding of milk replacer to early-weaned pigs was evaluated in two experiments. In Exp. 1, 18 litters of pigs were either weaned conventionally (d 21), split-weaned and fed milk replacer plus starter diet (d 14 and 21), or weaned and fed milk replacer plus starter diet (d 21). Split weaning combined with feeding a milk replacer increased ADG 22% from d 14 and d 28 compared to conventional weaning (P < .05). Feeding a milk replacer plus starter diet after weaning increased ADG 30% between d 21 and 28 compared to conventional weaning (P < .01). In Experiment 2, four litters of 12 pigs each were divided at d 18 into six heavy and six light pigs and randomized across sow-suckled, milk replacer, or starter diet groups. After 1 wk, pigs fed milk replacer weighed 20% more (P < .001), contained 10% more protein (P < .01) and 17% more fat (P < .05), and had 74% longer villi in the proximal small intestine (P < .001) than suckled pigs. In contrast, pigs fed starter diet weighed 19% less (P < .001), contained 20% less protein and fat (P < .001), and had 28% shorter villi in the proximal small intestine (P < .05) than suckled pigs. Therefore, milk replacer feeding the 1st wk after weaning stimulates pig development, both locally in the small intestine and on a whole-body basis, most likely by an increased energy and nutrient intake. Suckling beyond 18 d postnatally inhibits pigs to reach maximal potential weight gain. In conclusion, milk replacer feeding might be beneficial to reach maximal pig weight gain at weaning. 相似文献

The anti-influenza effects of camostat, a serine protease inhibitor, on in vivo influenza infections were evaluated. Mice which received non-adapted human influenza viruses intranasally, developed a reproducible infection with very low mortality. The infection was readily detected by the recovery of the virus from an oropharyngeal swab. Five-week-old ICR mice received intraperitoneal injections of saline (control), amantadine (known positive drug), or camostat, after infection with influenza A/Taiwan/1/86 virus. Virus detection was performed on day 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 of postinfection. Both camostat and amantadine were effective in ameliorating mouse influenza. On day 5, mice injected with camostat (45%) or amantadine (50%) showed a lower virus secreting rate than those receiving saline (90%). Additionally, camostat showed strong anti-influenza effects on an amantadine-resistant type A virus and a type B virus infection in vitro. The results show that blocking the hemagglutinin cleavage is an effective target for development of an anti-influenza agent. They also demonstrate that virus detection from the oropharynx of mice, infected with non-adapted virus, is a useful in vivo influenza model. 相似文献

In order to monitor whether paediatric education has adapted to meet modern practice 91 paediatric advanced trainees were surveyed to elicit their satisfaction with developmental-behavioural (DB) training. A response of 69% was obtained to a postal questionnaire. The traditional imbalance persists, with trainees considering themselves significantly better informed in the medical disciplines (P < 0.001). Satisfaction with training in the 14 developmental disciplines surveyed is less (P < 0.001) and significantly more variable compared with 11 traditional medical disciplines (P < 0.01). Formal rotations in DB disciplines had been received by all respondents by the 7th year of training. However, 46-67% consider themselves ill-informed in learning/school problems, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, adolescent problems, paediatric rehabilitation and language impairment. Thirty-seven per cent found formal postgraduate instruction unhelpful. Paediatric advanced training gives exposure to, but unsatisfactory formal education, in developmental and behavioural paediatrics. Current initiatives for mandatory DB training have serious implications for achieving adequate resources and standards to meet clinical and training demands. 相似文献

The present study describes the determination of two different types of hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and also distinguishing the hepatotoxic PAs from non-toxic ones by both in-source collision-induced dissociation high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (CID-HPLC/MS) and HPLC/MS/MS (CID in the collision cell), using electrospray ionization. The mass spectra provided molecular ions and characteristic fragment ions, which could be used readily for a rapid identification of different types of PAs. Applications of both in-source CID-HPLC/MS and HPLC/MS/MS analytical methods were successful for the determination of PAs in blood samples obtained from rats dosed with PAs and in the PA-containing plant. The results demonstrated that the developed HPLC/MS methods with two different CID techniques provided a very simple and rapid analysis for an unequivocal diagnosis of PA poisoning and for definitive identification of PAs in plants or herbal medicines. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate community pharmacists' interpersonal skills, ability to make appropriate assessment of a patient' s drug-related problems, and ability to propose an appropriate therapeutic plan. DESIGN: A disguised shopper design was used. Four different case scenarios were designed, with input from a five-member community/primary care pharmacist advisory committee. Two different cases were assigned to each of two shoppers. One hundred and one pharmacies were shopped twice, totaling 202 shopping experiences. A three-member evaluation committee made up of clinical faculty members in ambulatory care and internal medicine assessed the appropriateness of the recommendations. SETTING: The study was conducted in 101 randomly selected community pharmacies in the Pittsburgh area, including both chain and independent pharmacies. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main outcome measures included the quality of the pharmacists' interpersonal skills, patient assessment skills, and recommendations. RESULTS: The majority of pharmacists demonstrated acceptable to good interpersonal skills. Overall, 31.7% of the recommendations were appropriate, while 39.1% were poor (i.e., recommendations that would likely worsen the patient's condition or potentially harm the patient). In 33.2% of the cases, recommendations were made without prior assessment of the patient's problems. CONCLUSIONS: A lack of clinical knowledge and skills should be considered as a barrier that must be overcome if the provision of pharmaceutical care is to become a reality in community practice. 相似文献

The effect of Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA, Aspirin) on the myocardial production of the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the oxidation products of nitric oxide (nitrite, NO-2 and nitrate, NO-3: NOx) were studied in the rabbit heart two days after ligation of a branch of the left circumflex coronary artery. ASA was administered intravenously as AspisolR, DL-Lysinmono(acetylsalicylate) which is soluble in water. Animals received a total dose of 250, 375, or 500 mg/kg of ASA in five divided doses intravenously. Significant inhibition of iNOS was noted in the infarcted portion of the myocardium at 375 and 500 mg/kg of ASA. The reduction in myocardial nitric oxide (NO) production was paralleled by a diminution in coronary arterial-venous difference of NOx, demonstrating that ASA inhibition extended also to the oxidation products of NO. ASA is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX). The inhibition of iNOS by ASA demonstrates the close relationship between COX and iNOS activity in the heart in situ. Whether activity of the infarcted heart is influenced by the diminution in the production of NO by ASA is not known. 相似文献
